Images from Svenska Bearing AB

The pictures show the status of the new swedish solar telescope (NSST) on March 17, 2000. Not all shown parts are fully machined, also one ring has to be discarded and re-made. The main bearings and gears are expected at the end of May. Mirror cells exist only as partial prototypes.

It is amazing that all parts shown on the pictures were welded, annealed and machined within a total period of only 2 1/2 months!

Polishing of main optics (singlet lens plus two 1.4 m Zerodur flats) is expected to be completed before end of November 2000.

Status as of May 29, 2001.

The lower vacuum system has been manufactured, assembled and tested for vacuum in Gothenburg. Installation in La Palma is planned for the first two weeks in July.

The control system for the telescope is now undergoing tests on the telescope in La Palma.

During August to mid September work on holders for the Schupmann mechanics is to be completed.

Mirror cells for the 1.4 m mirrors will be modified and tested during June and August and sent to La Palma shortly thereafter.

Acceptance tests of 1.4 meter flats have been delayed until middle of August due to suspected thermal problems. We expect to ship the mirrors at the end of August, aluminize them in La Palma during the second part of September and install them shortly thereafter.

Schupmann Optics will be ready sometime towards the end of September.

First Light will be as soon as possible following the above installations.
